Birmingham has been given the green light today by the government for their new Metro plans. The new multi million pound deal has been accepted and will cause a major improvement in the areas economy, and has removed any ideas that the scheme may never go ahead.
A request was put forward to the government by the West Midlands Passenger Transport Centro that they pay almost half the bill for the extension within the Birmingham city centre. They have also requested that they pay a substantial amount towards the circular route around Wolverhampton area as well.
However they also plan to use their own resources along with money from private investors and local authorities to bring the rest of the funds together themselves.
As part of the arrangement with the government the only way to have access to funding for the metro network in 2006 was if they agreed to a congestions charge scheme. As this wasn’t accepted the Centro had to halt any plans until they had found an alternative means of funding the project.
Now that the funding has been obtained, they are hoping to have everything up and running by 2014. By building a new metro service they plan to encourage people to use the new public transport rather than driving to work on a daily basis.
This is just one of the steps within a ten year project in order to update and improve the overall public transport system in the Birmingham area. In order to encourage people to switch to a more sustainable mode of transport they are also looking into making vast improvements to a lot of the stations in the local area and fast tracking the small rail improvements.
These and many more ideas have been put forward for approval by the government to help keep the region on the right track.
